Workshop with Jonny Draper
As an unforgettable first wedding photography season draws to a close it was time to invest in some training and I was lucky enough to be able to spend the morning in the company of one of the very best wedding photographers about, Jonny Draper.
The session commenced with a quick intro and then it was straight in with some stunning models and the really cool backdrop of Castlefield, Manchester.
Jonny was was really insightful providing some excellent guidance on how to communicate with couples and getting them to relax around the photographer. Then is was down to business with a straight forward shot of the bride and groom walking down the street. Then on to posing with a moody contemporary vibe using the amazing texture of the underpass in Castlefield, shooting as wide as wide as possible and with some excellent guidance we were able to get some killer shots which only became more engaging when the off camera flash was introduced.
Using off camera flash is always a tricky business and having watched endless tutorials on youtube, I felt that i’d had relative success in past weddings however, working under the guidance of Jonny, really took it to the next level, producing some amazing images. The demonstration of posing of the bride and groom really worked to add drama to the image and more than justified the investment in training as I felt that within minutes of the shoot I had learned some invaluable lessons.
At this point, the emphasis turned to maximising creativity when in difficult locations therefore with switched perspective again making the most out of the moody texture provided by the underpass, with those all important tips on keeping the wedding couple relaxed and looking cool. In the past I would have tried this shot with both the bride and groom however shooting them individually was one of those small tips which will pay dividends in weddings to come.
Moving on swiftly, attention switched to using the sky as a backlight in addition to capturing images which really make the most of the environment, adding drama and style. to help in setting apart from the competition within the incredibly competitive wedding photography industry.
In conclusion, attending a wedding photography training workshop with Jonny Draper was really enjoyable and fun. He is a top guy who was happy to answer questions throughout and the experience left me feeling a more confident and able wedding photographer. can’t wait to shoot my next wedding now.
